Envu Formulations: Outsmarting Rodents, Outperforming the Competition

When business success goes hand in hand with reputation, professional pest control officers (PCOs) know that when tackling rodent infestations, positive feedback hinges on meeting customers’ need for swift knockdown and long-lasting control. For success, being equipped with a range of reliable rodenticide options for different situations is key; and it’s here that our advanced, high-quality bait formulations really stand out.

With a powerful portfolio backed by rigorous research, proven performance, and cutting-edge technology, our rodenticides have raised the bar, with a range of solutions that don’t just match the competition, but consistently outperform it.  We spoke to Envu experts; Biologist, Dr Stefan Endepols; and Christian Lubos, Technical Services Manager DACH, about the market-leading formulations from Envu that consistently deliver for PCOs.

Why formulation matters in rodenticides

High-quality rodenticide formulations are central to effective rodent control strategies. Excellent bait palatability plays a crucial role in ensuring rapid and consistent acceptance by rodents, leading to faster knockdown and fewer callbacks for PCOs.

Christian says, “The biggest problem in rodent control is bait uptake. Even the best active ingredient is useless if it’s not ingested. Using natural food sources in the formulation plays an important part in rodent acceptance. All our formulations are made from high-quality foodstuffs, that have been tried and tested. For example, we know rats love oatmeal, while mice prefer wheat and oilseeds; and in winter, fatty baits are preferred outdoors as rodents know they are very energy-rich, so are attracted to them.”

Stefan adds, “Our continual investment in the development of bait formulations, ensures bait is really attractive to rodents. In most cases we find that our formulations can compete with rodents’ natural feed, which, of course, helps make Envu’s rodenticides superior to other products.”

Meeting demand for sustainable rodenticides

Beyond palatability, our advanced formulations bring a range of other built-in benefits, that can directly impact customer satisfaction and long-term control. Stefan explains that sustainability is now an important consideration in rodenticide choice too.

“In formulations we help PCOs address any environmental concerns with our choice of active ingredients (AIs). With Coumatetrayl, for example, we have a highly potent active ingredient, which has very low environmental hazard potential. And the alternative, Cholecalciferol – is a non-anticoagulant that has almost no secondary toxicity issue. Envu providing both these AIs is totally unique.

“We’ve also developed new tools for rodent management to address environmental concerns connected to second generation anticoagulants,” Stefan continues. “Cholecalciferol, for example, is an alternative AI which doesn’t produce residues, and therefore does not accumulate in the food chain in nature. With it there’s almost no risk of secondary poisoning compared to second generation anticoagulants.”

Formulations that help combat resistance

Whether looking for strategies to combat genetic resistance or rodents’ behavioural avoidance of bait, being equipped with a high-quality and wide range of rodenticides enables PCOs to tackle even the most challenging infestations.

Christian says, “Using different AIs with different modes of action helps promote resistance-conscious management that is also compliant with an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach.

“With our wide portfolio of products, PCOs can respond to rodents’ different food preferences and control challenges. If, for example, it’s found that bait stations have been visited but no bait has been eaten, then the bait can be replaced with another high-quality formulation from Envu, that may be more attractive to the population.

“Another option, if there is high competition for food in the infested area and therefore only a small amount of bait is taken up, is Racumin® Foam. The advantage of the foam is that it can be applied to the rats’ holes and it sticks to rodents’ fur as they pass through. The active ingredient is then absorbed as the animal grooms itself,” Christian explains.

Global expertise in rodent control

Every infestation presents unique challenges and so equipping PCOs with what they need relies on our established and far-reaching expertise in rodenticide development.  Whether it’s commercial, residential, agricultural or industrial, our global experts will have addressed similar infestations before, drawing on solutions developed for PCOs all over the world, as Stefan describes.

“Envu is a global community, with technical people in Europe, Africa, Asia and Latin America. When we’re developing a bait formulation, we of course send samples to our colleagues across the world for them to test. We may also develop special formulations and baits required for particular species in a particular country. No two formulations will be the same; for example, what’s needed to protect agricultural crops in Asia, will not be the same as the formulation we use to control house mice in central Europe.

“It's important that pest controllers understand that every rodenticide is unique and they are educated about how choosing the right formulation for the job contributes to best practice. Just using the cheapest product and throwing it down somewhere will not make an infestation go away, and will be potentially harmful to the environment.

“Good pest controllers value their reputation and will focus on the information we provide about our investment into bait formulations, bait quality, package quality; and on things like the durability of bait itself. For example, some of our baits will still remain attractive even after three or four years of storage, which is another mark of their superior quality.”

Envu the trusted rodenticide partner

Our decades of expertise in developing rodenticide formulations have made Envu the trusted partner for PCOs who value their business reputations for reliable and environmentally conscious rodent control.

Our reputation, not only comes from providing one particular bait or one particular product; it also comes from the personal service and support we provide in practice, as Stefan concludes. “We have lots of technically, well-educated colleagues in different countries who really care about their contact with pest controllers. They regularly connect with distributors and with end users, providing training, and technical information; and being open for any discussion, advice or recommendations they may need.”

Christian continues: “We support PCOs not only with products, but with business support and expertise in the field of Integrated Pest Management. Training can be in-person or virtual; covering pest management strategies, regulations and product usage. In addition, at least once a year, we offer a group of PCOs the opportunity to visit our research and development facility here in Germany to see how we work.”
