Infographic: Pests and their impact on Public Health

The first step to ensuring Public Health sustainably is identifying threats. Among these are pests, which have a substantial impact on collectivities and are often putting them in jeopardy.

Various pests species and their associated risks

In this infographic, you will find a comprehensive overview of different types of pests and their impact on Public Health.

● Cockroaches are associated with 40 bacteria and 15 fungi, and most of them are also contaminated with Salmonella species.

Bed bugs are mainly transported in luggage and furniture since they cannot fly, and are able to survive months without eating.

Flea bites can be serious, since they can transmit bubonic plague: although plague rarely occurs in Europe, it is likely to re-emerge because of international travel and transportation.

Pharao ants have been imported from the tropics: as a consequence, they thrive in any building with central heating such as hospitals.

Mosquitoes are responsible for 800 000 deaths a year: they are the most deadly animals on Earth. They are vectors of many tropical diseases such as malaria, which
was eliminated from Europe after WWII but is likely to reappear because of international travel and transportation.

Challenges & solutions

Moreover, the situation is currently getting worse due to three major environmental and societal changes:

Climate change triggers the introduction of new pests and diseases
Pests are becoming more and more resistant to traditional pest management solutions
Tourism and international transportation are causing the introduction of species in places where they didn’t exist beforehand

However, although these threats to Public Health are numerous, efficient solutions exist.

This is why expert advice is now more necessary than ever: Pest Control Operators play a major role in the fight against pest proliferation and the reduction of Public Health issues associated with pests.

At Envu, we are working hand-in-hand with Pest Control Operators all around the world, and especially in the EMEA region (Europe, Middle East and Africa), to develop and provide efficient, sustainable and innovative products and solutions to help them – thus contributing to giving citizens sound public and private spaces.
